Kochi: A 35-year-old woman was grievously injured on Tuesday after being stabbed by her ex-husband in Angamaly. The injured is Riya Xavier from Sreemoolanagaram, while the accused is her former husband, Jinu, a native of Angamaly. According to the police, Riya, who works in Italy, was on vacation in Kerala. She was attacked when she went to Mookkannoor Forane Church to visit her children, who are currently staying with Jinu.

Around 10 am, while walking through a pocket road behind the church to catch an autorickshaw, she was confronted by Jinu. “The accused questioned her about visiting the children despite ongoing court discussions. He then blocked her and stabbed her on the left side of the abdomen and neck,” a police officer said.

Riya, who lost significant blood, was first taken to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to another hospital in Karukutty. She is now reported to be out of danger.

Police said Riya claimed she had court permission to visit her children despite the divorce. “We will verify her statement. The accused, who fled after the attack, has been traced and will be taken into custody soon,” police sources said. An FIR has been registered against Jinu under sections 118 (2) (causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon), 109 (murder attempt) and 126 (2) (wrongful restraint) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
