Kunnamkulam: The playground of the Government Model Girls' School here is all set to bring back the golden era of basketball in Kunnamkulam with a court now renovated by the municipality.

The court, built approximately 42 years ago, is part of a school that has completed 126 years of existence. In Kunnamkulam, known as the 'cradle of basketball' in the state, this court was the primary playing area for girls.

This court significantly contributed to raising the region's prestige by producing numerous basketball players who went on to join national, state, and district teams.

However, due to a lack of timely maintenance, it gradually deteriorated. The rusted rings and backboards, along with the crumbling concrete base, made playing in the court impossible.

Following complaints, the Municipality had allocated funds for the court's repair two years ago, but the renovation work was completed only recently. The court was renovated at a cost of ₹6 lakh.

A C Moideen MLA inaugurated the court, and Municipal Chairperson Seetha Raveendran presided over the event. As part of the inauguration, a basketball match was also held.
