Sabri came to Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy to learn Kathakali in 2023. Her arrival too had marked a new chapter in Kalamandalam’s history when a girl from the Muslim community joined to study Kathakali.
Sabri is the daughter of Nisam Ammas, a nature photographer from Thejas House in Idamulaykkal, and Aneesha. She secured admission to the eighth standard at Kalamandalam after clearing the written examination and interview. Eight girls, including Sabri, were admitted to the Thekkan (southern) category of Kathakali.
She was initially taught the mudras (symbols) by Kalamandalam Gopi. Later, she was trained by Kalamandalam Anilkumar and other instructors. She is now in the tenth standard. She used to accompany her father to Kathakali performances during his photography assignments.
Captivated by the striking colours and elaborate makeup of Kathakali, Sabri developed a desire to learn the art form as she grew up. Her family and relatives supported her ambition. She joined Kalamandalam after completing her seventh standard at Idamulaykkal Government Jawahar HSS. Kalamandalam opened its doors to girls for Kathakali training in 2022.
