Kottayam: Senior Congress leader and Kottayam MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Tuesday visited the Nair Service Society (NSS) headquarters in Perunna and held discussions with its General Secretary, G Sukumaran Nair.

His visit comes at a time when Sukumaran Nair, last week, expressed support for the LDF government's stance on Sabarimala, stating that it had not permitted the entry of young women into the temple and had refrained from enforcing it.

Thiruvanchoor, however, declined to comment on the matters he discussed with the General Secretary. Earlier, media reports stated that senior leaders PJ Kurien and Kodikunnil Suresh also visited Sukumaran Nair, a move seen as an attempt to soften the NSS's stance towards the Congress ahead of the crucial local body elections and the upcoming Legislative Assembly polls.

Sukumaran Nair earlier accused the Congress of wavering on faith-related issues and also criticised the BJP-led Centre for failing to support devotees. "We trust the government. The Congress and BJP have done nothing for believers. Union Minister V Muraleedharan once promised a law on Sabarimala, but what happened? Neither party can act," he said. He has also said that Congress doesn't need NSS votes.

However, the General Secretary later explained that the NSS has not shifted away from its policy of maintaining an equal distance from political fronts. "The NSS has stated its position very clearly earlier. We are ready to face any protests,” he told the media after addressing the NSS representatives’ meeting at the Pratinidhi Sabha Hall at the organisation’s headquarters on Saturday.
