Kochi: A massive python clinging to a tree at the Post Matric Hostel near Maharaja’s College in Kochi was safely captured on Wednesday evening after 10 hours of suspense.

The drama began around 9 am, when passersby noticed the giant snake coiled high on the branches of a tree in the hostel compound, located in one of Kochi’s busiest neighbourhoods. The sight immediately created panic, as the area is lined with shops, offices, and heavy pedestrian and traffic movement. Being close to a residential zone and an educational institution, fear spread quickly among the public.

Forest Department officials, Fire and Rescue service personnel, and local councillor Padmaja S Menon reached the spot soon after. Beat Forest Officer E K Biju described the situation as ‘a challenging mission’, saying it would be too risky to attempt to bring the snake down from such a height. The reptile was perched more than 30 metres above ground.

Initially, officials considered climbing up with a ladder to capture the snake, but the plan was abandoned as it posed danger to both the rescuers and the reptile. They even weighed the option of spraying water to force the snake down, but this too was ruled out since a fall from such a height could injure the animal.

With the python showing no signs of movement, the forest department decided to impose surveillance in the area and wait it out, while Sarpa volunteers, who are certified snake rescuers trained by the department, kept watch.

Finally, at around 7.30 pm, after 10 hours, the python slithered down on its own. The waiting Sarpa volunteers quickly moved in and secured the reptile, ending the hours-long standoff that had gripped onlookers and officials alike.

The python was then transported to the Social Forestry office at Edappally. On Thursday, a forest team from Malayattoor will take custody of the reptile and release it into the wild.

Officials believe the python made its way from the eastern forests through the Periyar River to Ernakulam, eventually reaching the city by hiding under a bus or truck, and taking refuge in the bushy Post Matric Hostel compound before climbing the tree.

Authorities repeatedly urged onlookers to exercise caution and keep a distance, warning that the snake might suddenly descend. “Since this is the city centre with a college and residences nearby, the risk was very real. We had to ensure both public safety and the snake’s safety,” said an official.
