Retired health worker in Kannur builds community hub for seniors, gains attention

Payyavur: While the majority of people his age are enjoying retired life, E J Augustine, a retired health worker, is engaged in a novel initiative to help the elderly spend their time joyfully.
E J Augustine, a native of Chandanakkampara and former health supervisor, has implemented a concept of establishing a space for people aged 60 and above to relax and engage in conversation. The space for the entertainment and leisure of the elderly has been set up near Chanthanakkampara town itself. Entry to the venue, established by Augustine using his own funds, is free for any elderly person who registers their name at the place.
He earned appreciation from the health department for implementing several innovative and people-friendly projects during his service. The `sugar hartal' organised at Kanichar Panchayat to raise awareness about diabetes had drawn significant attention. He also received the State Award for his contributions to eradicating tuberculosis.
He conducted awareness classes on epidemics, distributed name slips in schools and played a vital role in controlling dengue. The space for the elderly will be inaugurated and dedicated at a function to be held in Chanthanakkampara in connection with Elderly Day celebrations. A free trip to Ootty has also been arranged for the first 50 people who register after the inauguration.
