Kannur: A group of protesters confronted Koothuparamba MLA KP Mohanan of Loktantrik Janta Dal (LJD) on Thursday at Kariyad over allegations of contamination of drinking water from a local dialysis centre. Following the incident, Chokli police registered a suo motu case against 25 people for unlawful assembly and obstructing public transport. The MLA was on his way to inaugurate an anganwadi near Puthussery mosque when the protest took place.

The agitators, raising concerns over alleged contamination of drinking water by waste from the Thanal Dialysis Centre, tried to block Mohanan’s entry at 11.20 am. Visuals from the scene showed heated arguments and jostling, but the MLA escaped unhurt and went ahead with the event.

Locals have been protesting against the centre for over two years, claiming untreated waste from the centre is polluting drinking water sources. On Thursday, they accused Mohanan of failing to intervene in the matter.

According to the FIR, the accused had gathered with the intention of creating unrest and obstructing public movement. Police initially dispersed the crowd due to insufficient force to make arrests on the spot.
