Chenappady: Thankamma Ashatti, who has introduced hundreds of children to the world of letters, was felicitated on Vijayadashami day.
Over the past four decades, the 103-year-old Ashatti has taught the first letters to more than 400 children. The eldest woman in the village, she was honoured by local residents and the Chenappady Bhaktajana Samithi for her lifelong dedication to nurturing young minds.

Originally from Aranmula, Thankamma moved to Chenappady after marrying Thavooredathu Raghavan Nair. Having run a Nilathezhuthu Kalari, a traditional learning space for children, she continues to be revered in the community. Even today, families bring their young children to Thankamma Ashatti to begin their journey into literacy on auspicious occasions like Vijayadashami.

The felicitation programme was led by Suresh Ambazhathinal, patron of the Parthasarathy Bhaktajana Samithi, along with president Rajappan Nair Koyikkal, Sunil Pazhookkaparambil, Muraleedharan Nair Cheriyamadom, Jayakrishnan Nair Kutikkattu, P P Vijayakumar, Bindu Pulikkaparambil, and Rani Suresh Thattarathu.
