Kozhikode: The Medical College police on Saturday arrested a man who allegedly cheated a woman he had befriended on Facebook and fled with her 10 sovereigns of gold.

The accused, identified as Shaneer Kottakulam from Neeleswaram, Kasaragod, met the complainant — a Govindapuram native — on Facebook just three days before the incident. He reportedly told her that he could help pawn her jewellery for a higher loan amount with lower interest rates.

On Thursday, the woman handed over the ornaments — including her own and her mother’s wedding chains — to Shaneer near the Valayanad Temple, after he assured her that he would return soon after weighing them. However, he never came back.

When her attempts to contact him failed — as Shaneer blocked her on Facebook Messenger and other platforms — she filed a complaint with the Medical College police. The investigation team tracked him down to his residence in Kasaragod and recovered the stolen gold.

Police have booked Shaneer under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and fraudulently inducing a person to deliver property.
