Mukkam: The relay satyagraha (sit-in protest) launched in front of the municipal entrance under the banner of the farmers' collective, demanding protection for farmers and farmland from the worsening wild boar attacks in various parts of the municipality, has completed two days. Opposition councillors and UDF leaders visited the protest venue to express their solidarity.
They urged the municipality to halt anti-farmer measures and extend necessary support to the farming community.
The farmers began their satyagraha in front of the municipality after staging similar protests in their agricultural fields. They allege that the municipality has failed to take effective action to cull the wild boar population.
Standing committee chairpersons from the opposition, Majeed Babu and K K Rubeena, along with councillors Venu Kallurutty, M Madhu and Binny Manoj, visited the protest site yesterday.
Welfare Party councillors A Abdul Gafoot, Fathima Kodappana and Sara Koodaaram also pledged their support to the farmers. Councillors assured full backing to the farmers both within the council and beyond. A group led by Swathanthra Karshaka Sangham secretary for the assembly constituency, Sherif Ambalakkandy, also visited the pandal and expressed solidarity.
Office bearers of the farmers' collective have warned that protests will be intensified and satyagraha will be launched in agricultural fields starting tomorrow unless the municipality takes effective action.
