Karipur: A couple who had been stranded in Mecca for several months after the wife gave birth during Hajj have finally returned to Kerala. Their extended stay was due to the newborn's health complications.
Muhammad and his wife Hasnath, natives of Ovungal in Thalakadathur, Tirur, were under the care of the Indian Hajj Mission and the Saudi Hajj Ministry during their time in Mecca. They arrived at Karipur Airport yesterday.
The four-member family had travelled to Mecca on May 10 through the Hajj Committee to perform the pilgrimage and were scheduled to return on June 15. However, Hasnath, who was pregnant at the time, had to be hospitalised due to health complications. She gave birth to a baby boy via C-section on June 9.
Their return was delayed as the newborn developed health issues, requiring prolonged medical care. Despite the last group of pilgrims returning home, the family had to remain in Saudi Arabia. The baby passed away on September 28.
Kerala Minister V Abdurahiman and Hajj Committee Chairman Dr Hussain Saqafi Chullikkode had issued special instructions to ensure the couple’s well-being while abroad. Muhammad expressed gratitude for the support received, noting that food and accommodation were arranged by the authorities, and that several NGOs also extended help during their stay.
The Hajj Committee formally received the family upon their arrival at Karipur Airport.
