Sudhakaran, who is employed as a lab technician at the Government Taluk hospital, Thamarassery, is unable to shake off the horror that unfolded in front of him on Wednesday. It was Sudhakaran and another lab staff member, Anilkumar, who restrained Sunup after he hacked Dr Vipin P T.
After attending a conference held in the hospital, Dr Vipin was headed for casualty duty. On the way he was asked to deal with a patient regarding a lab report. Vipin entered the room of the Medical Superintendent and he was accompanied by Anilkumar and Sudhakaran. "The doctor was talking to the patient. We saw someone forcibly open the door, barge in and hacked the doctor. He was heard muttering something in rage like "You killed my daughter". We were startled. He was in such a state of anger and lunged forward to hack the doctor again. We immediately held him and shouted for help," Sudhakaran said.
He said that the doctor didn't have much time to react. "He was busy with the patient and was going through the records. Sunup rushed in and attacked the doctor. We are not sure why the doctor was targeted," said Sudhakaran, who has been working at the hospital for three years.
Other hospital staff said that but for the timely intervention of Sudhakaran and Anilkumar, the consequence would have been even more disastrous. Dr Vipin was supposed to take over the casualty duty at 2 pm. Following the attack, Dr Vipin was rushed to the casualty and then to the operation theatre and was referred to Baby memorial hospital. Although the doctors initially suspected a skull fracture, it has been ruled out. The condition of the doctor is presently stable.
Thamarassery police have slapped Sunup with charges pertaining to attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, trespass and under relevant sections of Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012 (AMENDMENT 2023).
According to the FIR, the incident happened at 1.30 pm. The police recorded that Sunup entered the room of Superintendent with the motive of murdering Dr Vipin and hacked him in his head. According to the police, Sunup held a grudge towards the doctors because his daughter had died of amoebic meningoencephalitis two months ago.
