Kozhikode: Dr Vipin PT (34), who was attacked by the father of a girl who died of amoebic meningoencephalitis, will undergo a minor surgery at Baby Memorial Hospital on Wednesday evening. The doctor had suffered a skull fracture in the assault.
Speaking to the media, a doctor at Baby Memorial Hospital said that Dr Vipin’s condition is stable, and CT scans have confirmed that there is no internal bleeding or brain injury.
“Dr Vipin is conscious and doing well. I spoke to him personally. No issues found in his CT report. His skull is fractured and the wound on the scalp is around 8 cm deep, so it needs to be stitched through a minor surgery,” said Dr Farbith Moideen of Baby Memorial Hospital.
Kozhikode police have arrested Sunup, who allegedly attacked the doctor. He is facing charges including murder attempt, voluntarily causing grievous hurt and trespassing under sections 109 (1), 118 (2) and 333 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He is also booked for offences under Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property ) Amendment Act 2023.
According to police, the accused had intended to target the hospital superintendent, but since the official was in a meeting, he instead attacked Dr Vipin.
Sudhakaran, a lab employee who witnessed the incident, said that Sunup attacked the doctor with a machete around 1.30 pm on Wednesday.
“Dr Vipin was attending to a patient who complained of chest pain. Suddenly, a man burst into the room and attacked him, shouting, ‘You killed my daughter!’” Sudhakaran recounted.
Another hospital employee confirmed that Dr Vipin had not treated Sanoop’s daughter, Anaya. The doctor who had attended to her had been transferred to Kannur, she said.
The nine-year-old girl had died of amoebic meningoencephalitis in August. Sanoop had accused staff at the Thamarassery Taluk Hospital of negligence, claiming that lapses in treatment led to his daughter’s death. Sanoop and family also accused the hospital authorities of hiding the cause of the child's death and blocking her death certificate.
