Chalissery: K U Yadhu Krishna, a pole vault athlete from Chalissery Higher Secondary School, has received financial assistance from sports enthusiasts to participate in the upcoming National Athletics Championship.

The Chalissery Marvel Arts and Sports Club contributed Rs.11,000, while the school staff pooled together Rs.10,000. Sports-loving local residents too have pitched in Rs.5,000. With this support, Yadhu, accompanied by two coaches, left for Odisha on Wednesday. His competition is scheduled to be held on Friday.

During the 2023 State Athletics Meet, Yadhu used a bamboo pole and still managed to secure seventh place. Impressed by his perseverance, Union Minister Suresh Gopi gifted him a fibre pole, which significantly improved his performance.

This year, Yadhu secured second place in the State Junior Athletics Championship (Under-20, male category), earning him a spot at the national event. The school authorities are now trying to raise Rs.1.5 lakh to buy him a professional-quality pole, though the required funds have yet to be arranged.
