Thrikkarippur: There was a time when cinema halls filled up not because of posters or reviews, but because someone narrated the story aloud. Even lacklustre films drew crowds, swept up by the magic of those spirited announcements. That era now slips into history with the passing of K V Kunjikkannan of Udhinoor Thadiyan Kovval.

Kunjikkannan was the announcer for Leena Talkies, a movie theatre that operated in Thankayam, Thrikkaripur, more than four decades ago. Seated in a jeep that trailed a cloud of dust, he would announce films in his deep baritone voice, tossing cinema notices to the crowd while narrating the story. Later, he became a skilled mechanic at Kumar Light and Sound in Thrikkaripur town. It was an era when mic mechanics were held in high regard.

His part-time bicycle repair work eventually earned him the title of Thrikkarippur’s `cycle doctor.' Until recently, he remained a sought-after bicycle repairer and ran a bicycle workshops at Thankayam Junction.

Kadhaprasangam was his weakeness. It was a time when performers like Sambashivan, Harshakumar and Velinalloor Vasanthakumari were shining stars of the art form. Kunjikkannan would record their performances at venues and play them back at high volume for others to enjoy.
