Kumarakom: A group of tourists dipped their oars in unison, slicing through the calm waters of the Kavanar River aboard two Chundan Vallams (snake boats) that had recently competed in this year’s Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Guests rowed on the Payippadu Chundan and Karuvatta Chundan, adding a splash of excitement to their Kumarakom tour.

The visitors, employees of an insurance company from various states, had arrived in Kumarakom as part of a corporate tour programme. Around 160 members participated in the event, with a hundred of them—including several women—joining the rowing session, which was conducted in two heats followed by a final.

With their oars striking the water in perfect rhythm to the Idichalam (traditional drum beats played onboard), the guests proved they could do more than just watch a boat race. The two snake boats were specially brought from Kuttanad to Kumarakom after the visitors expressed their wish to experience rowing the same boats that had competed in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
