Nedumkunnam: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Nedumkunnam and nearby villages around 2.30 pm on Sunday, causing widespread damage to houses, crops, and power lines.
Roofs of several houses were damaged as trees were uprooted by the gusty winds. Asbestos sheets from the house of Ezhikad Shibu at Veliyamkunnu were blown away, while a fallen tree crashed onto the under-construction home of Kalarikkal Hari at Aranappara.
Traffic along the Nedumkunnam–Myladi and Myladi–Manangadi roads was disrupted for several hours due to uprooted trees blocking the way. Power lines snapped along the Parakkal–Manangadi route, plunging several areas into darkness.
Extensive crop damage was reported, particularly to rubber, plantain, and tapioca plantations. Power cables were also brought down at Mundathanam near Kangazha, and a roadside advertising board at Elakkadu was toppled by the wind. The kitchen of a house owned by Binumon of Bindu Bhavan in Chirakkunnel near Pahanad was completely destroyed.
