Tenhipalam: The Calicut University authorities have dismantled a platform built for a bus waiting shelter on the roadside at Chettyarmattu, Olipram, citing that part of the structure encroached on university property.
University security officials had stopped the construction about a month ago when work first began. Despite repeated requests for approval, the university did not respond. Amid this uncertainty, security personnel reportedly brought in an excavator on Tuesday to dismantle the platform, according to office-bearers of the People’s Collective, the group that had undertaken the construction.

Since its establishment in 1968, the university had maintained a concrete bus shelter at Chettyarmattu along the highway, offering commuters some relief while travelling to the Olipram area. However, after the old shelter fell into disrepair, the university demolished it without setting up a replacement.

The latest dismantling comes just as the People’s Collective had begun efforts to construct a new shelter for commuters who have been waiting in the open for months.
