Kozhikode: In a rare phenomenon, water began receding along a 1.5 km stretch of Kozhikode beach on Wednesday night. By 9.30 am on Thursday, the effect was still visible. The water receded in the South Beach area for almost 200 metres.
By morning, the phenomenon shifted to the adjacent area opposite the Corporation office, where the water is slowly returning. At night, the exposed area was calm, with no waves or movement. In the morning, however, the sea became slightly rougher than usual. The receded water appeared muddy.
“The phenomenon started around midnight and continued till morning in South Beach, and then the water returned. It then moved to the next area, just opposite the Corporation office. Now the sea is getting rough,” said SK Aboobacker, ward councillor of the 6th ward.
Officials from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) visited the beach to monitor the situation, and the Tahsildar from the Taluk office also inspected the area. “There was a high tide in the morning, which returned to normal by 8 am,” said a CMFRI official.
Earlier, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued an alert about the possibility of a black sea phenomenon and rough seas from Thiruvananthapuram to Kollam. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea and to keep their boats ashore.
