Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon withdrew from India on Thursday. At the same time, the northeast monsoon has commenced over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala-Mahe, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The onset of the northeast monsoon is associated with the following weather features:
- An upper air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and its neighbourhood, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels.
- The setting in of easterly and northeasterly winds over southern peninsular India and adjoining regions of the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels.
- Fairly widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, and adjoining parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Kerala during the past 24 hours.
- Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu during the same period.

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms across Kerala till October 19. Heavy (7–11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy (12–20 cm) rainfall is very likely at isolated places in Kerala on October 16 and 17.  Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are also likely over Kerala and Lakshadweep between October 15 and 19.

Light to moderate rain has been reported in isolated parts of the state since October 12, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep region. In view of the rough weather, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea off the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts till October 19.
