Kannur: Heavy rain in the hilly areas of Kannur on Monday caused flash floods, landslips, and property damage, particularly in Cherupuzha Panchayat.

In Cherupuzha, water entered two houses and several commercial establishments. The compound wall at the backyard of a house in Mulapra Akkara collapsed. The house belonged to Joby K P, according to Panchayat Vice President Reji Benny. Water also entered two homes in Perunthadom, belonging to Palakkal Papachan and Noorudheen.

“Thirumeni and Prapoyil wards were worst affected, with water entering around three houses and local roads. The flash floods carried sand and stones, causing further damage. Although rain had been persistent for several days, Monday’s downpour was particularly heavy. By evening, the rainfall had subsided,” said Praveen K D, Thirumeni Panchayat president.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and a green alert for Tuesday in Kannur. The northeast monsoon remains active over Kerala. Consequently, the weather agency has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts in the coming days also.
