Vithura: Women members of the Vana Samrakshana Samithi (local forest protection collectives under the Forest Department) became saviours for two macaques that fell to the ground after being electrocuted. The incident took place around 9 am near the Golden Valley check post at Kallar, Vithura.
The macaques had come into contact with overhead power lines, causing them to fall and lose consciousness upon impact. Moments later, they began trembling in pain, and one of them sustained a visible injury to its forehead.
Acting swiftly, DC Udaya, vice president of the Ponmudi Vana Samrakshana Samithi, along with members SJ Sachithra and M Sougandhika, lifted the animals and administered CPR. They also treated the forehead wound on one of the macaques with medication. The electrocution occurred while a group of macaques was engaged in a fight near the power lines.
Thanks to their timely intervention, both macaques regained consciousness and were soon able to return to the woods. This was not the first such rescue at the location—several months ago, Beat Forest Officer P.S. Arun had rescued a baby macaque that was electrocuted in the same area, also performing CPR to save its life.
