Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has sanctioned ₹14 crore for emergency retrofitting and temporary protection works at Shangumukham Beach ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city for Navy Day celebrations on December 4. 

The Water Resources Department issued an order granting administrative sanction for the project, which aims to strengthen and beautify the beach area. The work will be carried out by the Irrigation Department.

The decision follows review meetings chaired by the Chief Secretary and the Secretary of the Public Administration Department, which directed the Irrigation Department to implement the project urgently in view of the Prime Minister’s visit.

The department has been instructed to ensure that the project does not duplicate any existing work or overlap with projects still under the Defect Liability Period.

Shangumukham Beach faces severe coastal erosion, damaging the shoreline, footpaths, seating areas, and threatening historic structures like the Arattu Mandapam. Experts warn that prior temporary measures, such as the diaphragm wall, may have worsened erosion, raising doubts about the effectiveness of another rushed, short-term fix.
