Thiruvananthapuram: The northeast monsoon will intensify across Kerala, bringing heavy rainfall, as the India Meteorological Department has warned of the formation of a new cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. A fresh low-pressure area formed over southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday is gaining strength and is set to intensify into a cyclonic storm on October 27, alerted IMD. Apart from Odisha and West Bengal, Tamil Nadu is also placed on high alert in view of the cyclonic storm. The cyclonic storm will be named Montha as recommended by Thailand.

In view of the cyclonic storm, the IMD has predicted that heavy rain accompanied by strong winds will continue in Kerala till October 28.

The IMD has sounded a yellow alert in Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Saturday.

Meanwhile, overnight heavy rains and strong winds brought down trees and power lines, damaging houses and vehicles and causing power outages and traffic disruptions in several areas.

The heavy rainfall on Friday, resulted in waterlogging in low-lying areas across the state and a rise in water levels in various rivers.

Water levels in several dams, including Walayar, Malampuzha, Moolathara, and Chuliyar in Palakkad, approached their maximum storage capacities, prompting authorities to open the shutters by several centimetres.
