Madikkai: The District Industries Centre in Kasaragod has initiated programmes to collaborate with NABARD for promoting sustainable growth of the clay-based industry in Erikkulam. With GI tag and modern designs the centre is aiming for a global reach.

The project, being implemented in association with local self-government bodies, is designed in partnership with Agro Nature, an Ernakulam-based organisation. As part of the project, a meeting was held at the Erikkulam Devaswom Hall to explain its functioning and review the progress of efforts to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the locally-manufactured clay products. The meeting also decided that the project’s implementation would be overseen by a locally constituted society.

The initiative aims to modernise the manufacturing of clay products in Erikkulam by introducing new designs and standards, moving beyond traditional products to target the global market. Obtaining the GI tag is expected to enhance market value and recognition for these products.

The society is also planning to set up e-commerce platforms and pottery studios under the project. Plans are also underway to establish a tourism circuit by linking various destinations with tourism potential in and around Erikkulam.
