Thrissur: The Forest Department has issued a warning to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) for violating wildlife protection norms by halting buses inside forest areas along the Athirappilly–Malakkappara route.

Officials said KSRTC drivers have been stopping buses to let passengers view or photograph wild elephants, a practice strictly prohibited within forest zones. These halts also cause private vehicles behind to stop, creating traffic congestion inside the wildlife corridor.

The stretch is frequently obstructed by the lone tusker ‘Kabali’ and other elephants, posing a danger to commuters. Forest authorities said such interruptions encourage risky encounters and worsen human–animal conflict.

Following repeated reports, the Sholayar Range Officer issued a notice to the Chalakudy KSRTC depot on October 22, warning of legal action if the practice continues. The department reiterated that further violations would invite prosecution under forest laws.
