Vannappuram: It has been four years since tourists were barred from visiting Meenuliyan rock, a major view-point that once drew visitors from across the region.

Standing atop this rock formation offers panoramic views stretching to Ernakulam, including the Periyar River. The Forest Department, however, imposed the ban citing potential safety risks. While closing the spot, the department also assured that a Forest Development Committee or Vana Vikasana Samiti (VVS) would be set up and trained guides selected from the committee to oversee tourism. However, four years later, none of these measures has materialised.

Security personnel continue to be stationed at the entry point to prevent visitors from accessing the rock. Meenuliyan rock and the nearby Panjalikkulam pond were once popular spots for locals and tourists alike, providing a steady income for regional vendors. The prolonged closure has severely impacted their livelihoods.

In Pattayakkudi village, traditionally a farming community, residents have struggled with growing wildlife threats, which have prevented them from continuing their agricultural activities. At the same time, the Forest Department is not permitting any tourism-related development in the area. Both visitors and local residents are urging authorities to reopen the site to the public.
