Kozhikode: The Fisheries Department seized two fishing boats and imposed fines totalling ₹3.4 lakh for using banned fishing gear and high-voltage light equipment at local harbours, officials said on Sunday.

The boats — Love Mary and Shivadam — were detained during separate patrols carried out on Saturday.

A patrol team led by V Suneera, Assistant Director of the Beypore Fisheries Station, intercepted Love Mary near Beypore harbour after it was found using high-intensity lights for fishing. The boat owner was fined ₹90,000, reported PTI.

In a separate operation near Puthiyappa harbour, officials seized the Shivadam boat for deploying prohibited nets and failing to install the mandatory square-mesh code end. Fisheries Extension Officer Shyam Chand seized the boat and slapped a fine of ₹2.5 lakh.
