Thrissur: A wild elephant strayed into a residential area in Kuthiran Irumpupalam on Tuesday night and injured a forest watcher. Biju, who was attempting to drive the animal away, sustained a fractured leg and is undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College Hospital.

The elephant entered the area around 9 pm from the Kuthiran temple side and roamed through Irumpupalam and Chackola area under the Pananchery panchayat. Locals warned residents to stay indoors as the tusker remained in the locality until about 2 am, causing panic.

During efforts to drive the animal back into the forest, the elephant attacked Biju, seriously injuring him. Residents said the tusker has been in the area for a week. With Ayyappa devotees frequenting the Kuthiran temple, locals have been alerting pilgrims and preventing them from entering danger zones.
