Kuthuparambu: A large water tank placed in a precarious condition atop weakened concrete pillars, in the centre of the town, is posing a threat to the people in the vicinity. This tank was built by the Kerala Water Authority in the revenue land between the municipal bus stand and stadium to supply water to the people of Kuthuparambu.
When the water requirement in the city spiked old projects gave way to new, big water supply systems. Thus the old water tank in the middle of the city was left abandoned.
A well was also built earlier on a paddy field near Kannur Road to pump water to this tank. However, it’s been more than three decades since the project was called off. The gigantic water tank that was part of a cancelled project is now situated between the compound wall of the Kuthuparambu sub jail and Pathalayi Kunjikannan Smaraka Library where a cultural centre functions.
Meanwhile, people in the vicinity fear that the tank with weakened pillars, withered concrete and exposed iron bars might collapse at any moment. The sub jail officials too have raised concern that the old water tank poses a threat to their compound wall.
The authorities of the Pathalayi Kunjikannan Smaraka Library are also worried about their safety. They have been urging the local goevrnment authorities to dismantle the water tank that is almost in a state of ruin.
