Kochi: Renowned Malayalam poet KG Sankara Pillai was selected for this year’s Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary honour instituted by the Kerala government. The award carries a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, a citation, and a plaque.

Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian announced the award on the occasion of Kerala Piravi Day on Saturday. The minister lauded the poet’s remarkable contribution to Malayalam literature over the past five decades.

Pillai was chosen for the award by a jury chaired by writer N S Madhavan, with literary figures K R Meera and Dr K M Ani as members, and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Member Secretary C P Aboobacker serving as the jury secretary.

A recipient of both the Kerala and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Awards in 1998 and 2002, respectively. His works have been translated into several Indian and foreign languages, including English, Chinese, and French.

His noted works include “K.G. Sankara Pillayude Kavithakal (1969–1996)” and “KGS Kavithakal (1997–2007)”.
