Kasaragod: Tension prevailed on the National Highway 66 in Thekkil near Cherkala on Sunday after house owners threatened to end their lives if their homes were seized as part of the highway expansion. Residents told the media that no official notice had been served and that the authorities had not provided any valuation, despite a directive from the Kasaragod District Collector six months back.
“If proper notice and valuation are given, we will vacate immediately. But so far, nothing has been provided. Instead, the construction company started the work suddenly today,” one resident said.
According to the alignment plan, the front pillars and courtyard of his house fall within the national highway boundary. The Kerala High Court had earlier stayed the dismantling of the front portion of the house. However, residents allege that the construction company is now claiming the stay has been lifted without producing any official notice.
Meanwhile, the house owner reportedly placed a gas cylinder inside the house, threatening to blow it up along with the occupants if officials proceeded with demolition. People have expressed support for the family, alleging that the authorities have failed to properly construct a service road or drainage system in the area.
