Pazhanji: Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop Abune Melketsedek on Wednesday revelled in the annual feast celebrations at Mooleppad Mar Baselios Mar Gregorios Church, coming face-to-face with a majestic elephant and immersing himself in the rhythmic percussion.
Experiencing a live elephant for the first time, the prelate even grasped the tusk of a tusker during the ceremonial parade, fully embracing the vibrant festivities.
Dr. Geevarghese Mar Yulios and Vicar Fr. Joseph Cheruvathur explained the festivities to the Archbishop, who blessed the gathering at the conclusion of the event. It was during his visit to Kerala to attend the annual commemoration of the death anniversary of St. Geevarghese Mar Gregorios of Parumala, a revered saint of the Malankara Orthodox Church, that Abune Melketsedek learned about the renowned festival at the church in Kunnamkulam.
He arrived at the Mooleppad Church yesterday from the Catholicate Episcopal Palace in Devalokam, Kottayam. Percussion plays a significant role in Ethiopian worship traditions.
The Archbishop was accompanied by Dr Fr Josy Mathew, Principal of the Nagpur Seminary, and Fr Jiyo Mattumel.
