Kottayam: The Congress has stepped in to stop a private financier from evicting a woman and her differently abled daughter over a loan default. Following the intervention of Kottayam MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, an agreement was reached allowing Usha Kumari of Vishnu Vilasam, Poovanthuruth, Panachikkad, and her daughter to continue living on the first floor of their house until the matter is settled in court.

The intervention came a day after Manorama reported their plight. Usha Kumari and her daughter have been facing severe financial hardship after her husband, P Sivadasan, allegedly took a ₹51 lakh loan from a private financier against their house without their knowledge and later abandoned the family.

The family now plans to approach the court seeking a stay on the property attachment proceedings. Congress general secretary and lawyer Siby Chenappadi will provide legal assistance.

Meanwhile, a team of Congress workers led by Sibi John Kaithayil, president of the Congress East Block, visited the family on Thursday and provided essential supplies including groceries, medicines, and other necessities. The rusted ladder that the family used to reach the first floor had also collapsed and it was promptly rebuilt by the workers. Palliative care volunteers have also extended their supportto the family in distress.

Shaji Mundakkal, owner of Carmel Catering Service, has offered to provide free meals to the family, considering that Usha Kumari cannot leave her daughter alone at home to go for work.

The agency responsible for the property attachment informed the MLA that while the sealed ground floor would remain untouched, a report would be submitted to the court detailing the family’s circumstances. The financial company’s representatives have also agreed to explore alternative repayment options in the presence of the MLA.
