Palakkad: Two children died and another was seriously injured on Sunday after the wall of an unfinished house collapsed at Karuvara, Agali, in Attappadi.
The deceased have been identified as Aadi (7) and Ajnesh (4), children of Ajay and Devi from the Muthuka tribal settlement. Their relative Abhinaya (6), daughter of Murukan and Anita, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital in Thrissur.
“The accident happened around 5 pm. The children, who often played near the structure, were at the site when the wall and sunshade suddenly gave way,” said Chindakki ward member Bindhu.
She noted that construction of the house had been stalled for nearly nine years. “The roof was never completed, and years of rain exposure may have weakened the structure, leading to the collapse,” she added.
The house, sanctioned under a government tribal welfare scheme in 2016, belonged to another resident of the settlement. "Financial constraints are believed to have halted the work," Bindhu added.
Both deceased children were students of St George LP School in Seenkara. They were rushed to a nearby private hospital and later to the Kottathara Tribal Taluk Hospital, but could not be saved.
Ajay and Devi, both daily wage workers, have another younger child.
