Vannappuram: Seventy-eight-year-old Narayanan, a resident of Munneetti in Mullaringod, has been knocking on the doors of government offices for over 1,000 days, seeking compensation for the house he lost in a landslide.

Officials at the Vannappuram village office told him that ₹4 lakh has been sanctioned, but the payment has been delayed due to the pending fund allotment.

A portion of Narayanan’s house, including the front room, was washed away in a landslide on August 6, 2022. Since then, he has been running from pillar to post in pursuit of compensation. Originally, ₹10 lakh was allotted to victims who lost both their home and land in landslides. Yet, despite the majority of his house being destroyed, Narayanan has been sanctioned only ₹4 lakh, and even that amount has not been released yet.

Narayanan and his wife Shaila were spared during the tragedy as they happened to be in a neighbouring house when the landslide struck. Although they applied for compensation immediately, they have not received any benefits even after several years. Narayanan has already spent a considerable amount in terms of travel cost by visiting various offices.
