Neglect turns Kariyathumpara Tourism Centre in Kozhikode into a safety hazard

Koorachund: The overgrown vegetation and thick weeds that have taken over the Kariyathumpara Tourism Centre, a popular destination managed by the District Tourism Management Committee, have now become a serious threat to visitors.
The issue stems from the delay in clearing the vegetation at the Kariyathumpara beach area, a site owned by the Irrigation Department. Despite collecting an entry fee of ₹30 per visitor, the authorities have been criticised for their laxity in maintaining the premises and ensuring visitor safety. Local residents have voiced strong protests, pointing out that the authorities continue to earn significant revenue from ticket sales while neglecting basic upkeep and safety measures.
The situation has been made worse by the presence of reptiles in the thickly grown bushes. Recently, a child visiting the site with a group of tourists had to be rushed to the hospital after being bitten by a snake.
Adding to the woes, basic amenities for visitors are completely lacking. Tourists who come to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Kariyathumpara reservoir, meadows, river, and hillsides are left without even a temporary shelter to protect themselves from rain or the scorching sun.
