Marayur: A section of the old building at the Government Higher Secondary School collapsed, raising serious safety concerns.

The front portion of a room used to store laboratory materials caved in on Tuesday afternoon, but no injuries were reported as no students were present at the time.

Students were moved to a new building a couple of years ago after the old structure was declared unsafe. However, a part of the dilapidated building continued to be used to store laboratory equipment.

The authority had been alerted about the building’s poor condition in advance and based on this, an engineer inspected the structure last week. Located close to the school playground, the damaged block is now being widely seen as a hazard, with calls growing for its immediate demolition.
