Kottayam: Ever since the collapse of an old overhead tank in Thammanam, Kochi, residents of Pakkil in Kottayam have been gripped by fear over a similar structure in their neighbourhood. A 60-year-old abandoned water tank near the Sree Dharmasastha Temple has become a source of constant worry for locals who fear it could give way at any time.

Although the tank no longer holds water, the massive structure poses a serious risk of collapse. Cracked concrete, exposed and rusting iron rods, and overgrown vegetation have left it in a state of severe neglect. Located close to the temple and several houses, the tank’s deteriorating condition poses an imminent risk of collapse.

Residents have urged the authorities to dismantle the tank immediately, complaining that the danger it poses has long been ignored.

The municipality, however, cites delays due to unclear ownership of the property on which the tank stands. The land was originally privately owned, and there are no documents confirming that it has been officially handed over to the municipality. Officials also explained that a letter seeking to dismantle the structure was sent to the Kerala Water Authority a year ago, but no action has been taken so far.
