Thenhipalam: Shaji is no stranger to the walls of Chelari, in every sense of the word. For years, those walls have been familiar with him as he approached them with symbols and names cutting across political parties. This time, however, it will be different—he will be writing his own name and symbol alongside others. And from those walls will resound a message: Elect Shaji Chelari with a huge majority.

Shaji Chelari, who has been adding colour to election campaigns in the Chelari area for the past ten years, is now the UDF independent candidate from Putheri Valappu ward in Muniyur panchayat. He teaches painting to numerous students in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. Shaji has also drawn attention by helping cancer patients by mobilising funds through exhibitions of his works and organising painting camps. He once presented playback singer K S Chithra with her portrait during her visit to Chelari.

He has been actively engaged in artistry, including painting advertisements on walls and banners for prominent businesses. His work earned him a place in the Limca Book of World Records through paintings on Gandhian thoughts, created during the Gandhipadham painting camp organised by the Gandhi Chair of Calicut University. He participated in the camp along with several prominent artists.

Shaji says he agreed to contest, though not an active politician, after many people lovingly persuaded him. Even while busy with his campaign, he promises to continue doing graffiti for other candidates if time permits.
