Kottayam: Fire and rescue personnel saved a woodcutter who was stranded atop a 70-foot-tall teak tree. The man, identified as 42-year-old Siju from Sankranthi, was unable to climb down after suddenly feeling unwell.

Siju, who was cutting branches near the Caritas overbridge around 10 am on Monday, experienced dizziness caused by low blood pressure. As he grew increasingly uneasy, he secured himself to the trunk with a safety rope and remained stuck for nearly an hour and a half.

Responding to the alert, fire and rescue officers Abbasi and Ajayakumar scaled the tree and provided him with water, as he appeared visibly distressed. After he regained some strength, the team used a chair-knot and pulley-block system to safely lower him to the ground. He was then rushed to the Medical College Hospital.

The operation involved Station Officer Biju, Senior Fire and Rescue Officer Shibu V Nair, personnel Swagath, Sajeesh, Anish G Nair, Abdul Rashid, firewomen Anu and Ashna, and Home Guard Anil Kumar, with help from local residents.
