Monsoon rains stabilise Malankara dam levels amid Moolamattom power halt

Idukki: Despite the suspension of electricity generation at the Moolamattom hydropower station, the water level in the Malankara Dam has remained unchanged. The dam, situated in Idukki district, continues to hold water at its full capacity of 42 metres.
Power generation at Moolamattom has been halted due to maintenance work. Under normal circumstances, water released during power generation flows downstream to the Malankara Dam. Anticipating a drop in water levels following the shutdown, Malankara officials closed the dam shutters. However, continuous heavy rainfall associated with the northeast monsoon kept the water level stable.
Currently, a limited volume of water is being released from Malankara Dam into the Thodupuzha River to ensure drinking water supply for the region, while generating only a minimal amount of electricity. Malankara Dam is the primary source of drinking water for the Thodupuzha municipality and seven neighbouring panchayats—Arakkulam, Kudayathoor, Velliyamattom, Idivetty, Alakkode, Muttom and Karinkunnam. More than a hundred water supply schemes in the area rely on it for daily needs.
