Kozhikode: The Kannur Excise Enforcement team on Sunday seized a large quantity of smuggled spirit from a lorry coming from Karnataka on Saturday. The driver, identified as Sivananda from Ingalagi in Karnataka, has been arrested. The lorry was reportedly travelling from Hubballi in Karnataka, officials said.

According to officials, the raid was conducted around 9.45 pm at Kothi Kozhichapara near Ramapuram. The excise team, led by Inspector Siyad, recovered 11,055 litres of spirit hidden under bags of cattle feed in the lorry. Officials seized 335 cans, each containing 33 litres, from the vehicle. 

The operation was carried out based on a specific tip-off received by the Excise Intelligence Assistant Commissioner (Northern Zone). Officers from Neeleswaram, Payyannur, Alakkode and Taliparamba excise ranges also took part in the raid. Kannur Excise Deputy Commissioner Satheesh Kumar reached the spot and supervised the proceedings.
