Kozhikode: The timely intervention of a passerby saved the life of a 28-year-old man who attempted to kill himself by jumping into the Muthambi River near Koyilandy on Sunday.
The man, a native of Iyyachira near Koyilandy, reportedly jumped from the Muthambi bridge around 2.30 pm. Shijeesh Nerothmeethal, who was crossing the bridge at the time, noticed the man and immediately sought help.
He stopped a tipper lorry passing by and collected a rope from it, which he lowered into the river. The man, who was struggling in the water, clung to the rope until a fisherman’s boat arrived and pulled him to safety. Shijeesh stayed on the bridge, holding the rope and guiding the man until the rescue was complete.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Koyilandy station, led by Assistant Station Officer P M Anil Kumar, soon reached the spot and shifted the man to the Koyilandy Government Hospital.
