Pathanamthitta/ Thelliyoor: The Thelliyoorkavu Temple has come alive with overflowing crowds with the start of the Thelliyoorkkavu Vanibham, reviving an age-old tradition that has shaped the region’s cultural and commercial life for centuries.

The origins of this grand fair can be traced to the ancient practice of exchanging goods offered to the temple. In earlier times, people brought commodities and bartered them for what they needed. With the advent of coins, the fair grew in scale, and the variety of materials on sale expanded significantly.

As vendors from faraway places began arriving, the face of the trade fair gradually shifted towards modernity. Yet, the ritualistic roots of the Thelliyoorkkavu Vanibham have always remained intact, giving it a unique cultural identity. While many such traditional fairs faded over time and were eventually discontinued, the Thelliyoorkkavu Vanibham has continued to flourish.

Today, tens of thousands of people visit here to take part in the fair and to offer darshan at the Bhagavathi temple. Even those without a fixed monthly income save money specifically to spend at the fair.
