Alappuzha: The installation of the girders for the new skywalk at the Alappuzha railway station was successfully completed. The work, which began at 10.30 pm on Tuesday, concluded at 4.20 am on Wednesday, during which train traffic on the route was regulated. Vehicular movement on the station road was also partially restricted through the night, before being restored at 6 am.

The upcoming skywalk will link Platforms 1, 2 and 3, enhancing passenger movement within the station. Four massive girders were lifted into place using heavy-duty cranes. Once the staircase construction is completed — expected to begin next month — the six-metre-wide skywalk will be opened to the public.

Railway Chief Project Manager Kannan, Deputy Manager Marimuthu, Assistant Divisional Engineer Beena Krishnan, and Lee Builders’ MD Babu Thomas and CEO Praveen supervised the overnight operation.

As part of the Amrit Bharat scheme, a second walkway is also under construction at the station at a cost of ₹10 crore. The new skywalk rises in front of the station’s main entrance, marking another step in the ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
