Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor, will be renamed Lok Bhavan (People’s House) on December 1. Governor Rajendra Arlekar—currently in his home state of Goa—is expected to issue the official notification on Monday. Once notified, the address will formally become Lok Bhavan, Kerala.

Arlekar had first proposed the name change at the Governors’ Conference in 2024, stressing the need to make the Governor’s residence more accessible and connected to the public.

The renaming move follows a Union government decision to shed British-era terminology from the administrative system. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, through an order issued on November 25, directed all Raj Bhavans across the country to adopt the new nomenclature.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya issued the notification on Friday, while West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose followed on Saturday, making the name change official in their respective states.

The Centre has also decided to rename Raj Niwas—the official residence of Lieutenant Governors, including in Delhi—as Lok Niwas.
