Candidacy in the 2026 assembly elections is not an easy decision for Actor Ramesh Pisharody to make. When asked about rumours of his entry into electoral politics during a session on public relations at Manorama Hortus, he initially evaded the question.
"Anyone who has attained the mandatory age to contest elections is free to do so. In that case, all those people who have assembled here can contest elections," he said. Manorama News Journalist Jayamohan, then reminded him about the buzz around his candidacy. This time, the reply was more straightforward.
"I have never concealed my politics. I have been quite open about it. As for my candidacy, it's for the party to decide. If at all the party asks me to be a candidate, it's not an easy decision. All my life, I have built my career presenting stage programmes. Assembly election is a huge responsibility. I need to talk it over with my family about many aspects. Since we talk about PR, it could also be used in a negative manner. My family should be able to deal with such negativity aimed at me. So it's a very important decision, which can't be taken easily," said Pisharody.
He added that staying away from his career is also another factor. Pisharody had officially joined the Indian National Congress in 2021. He had attended the Aishwarya Kerala Yatra led by the then Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala in Alappuzha. Though the Congress leadership has not made any official statements, rumours have been afloat about Pisharody's candidacy in Tripunithura.
Talking about PR reflecting in personal ways, he said that these days people are forced to put up status messages on social media just to publicise that their marriage is healthy. "Truth may be otherwise. It's also a form of PR. I have a friend who keeps telling me that he married the wrong person, but on his wedding anniversary, he made a collage of his old marriage photo with a recent one and waxed eloquent about their strong bond. Later, he would tell me that his partner was not ideal for him. That's the pressure of PR, you have to do certain things against your wish," said Pisharody. He said that, be it cinema or politics, PR is unavoidable.
He also added that it was meaningless to take a stand in global matters where your opinion as an actor would only serve to divide people and would have no impact at all in terms of resolving the issue.
