Ernakulam: Serious health and environmental concerns have been raised after sulphur and salt transported to a nearby industrial area in Kalamassery were found spilling in large quantities onto public roads. Residents alleged that the chemicals are being moved in lorries without any safety precautions.

According to locals, sulphur spilt on the road gets crushed into fine powder as vehicles pass over it. The dust is then carried by the wind, causing eye irritation and breathing difficulties for pedestrians, commuters, and residents. The sulphur particles settle on food inside homes and restaurants. During the rainy season, the dissolved sulphur is said to cause damage to roadside vegetation.

Residents claim that the vehicles transporting these chemicals routinely violate regulations. Overloaded lorries spilling materials while taking sharp turns at high speed are a frequent sight. Sulphur and salt are the substances most commonly found scattered along the route.

Despite repeated complaints to the authorities, the issue remains unresolved.
