Thrissur: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has announced that he will contest from Nemom in the upcoming assembly election. He made the announcement during a programme organised by the Thrissur Press Club. His response came when he was asked whether he would be a candidate in the assembly polls.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar said he was “one hundred per cent certain” about contesting. He went on to confirm that Nemom would be his seat.

Responding to a question on whether Shashi Tharoor would join the BJP, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said he did not have such expectations.

The announcement by the state president comes even before the party began internal discussions on candidate selection for the assembly elections. There had already been speculation that Rajeev Chandrasekhar might contest from Nemom. Traditionally, the BJP finalises its candidates through a parliamentary party meeting.

In the recent Lok Sabha election, Rajeev Chandrasekhar led the BJP’s campaign against Shashi Tharoor in the Nemom region. Nemom is significant for the party as it won its first-ever MLA seat in Kerala in 2016. While O Rajagopal won the seat in 2016, Kummanam Rajasekharan lost in 2021. At present, Minister V Sivankutty is the MLA from Nemom.
